Nina in a cold-sleep machine
The cold-sleep machines were part of a cryonics research project spearheaded by Doctor Bosconovitch, carried out under the Mishima Zaibatsu, whilst Kazuya Mishima was CEO. Their invention was tied to human resurrection and genetic experimentation, and they continued to be used after Heihachi Mishima took back control of the Zaibatsu. Both Nina Williams and Anna Williams were successfully cryogenically frozen in the cold-sleep machines for fifteen years.
History[]
The original cold-sleep machines were made by Doctor Bosconovitch, likely in Russia. They were part of his research on human resurrection, as he attempted through cryogenic research and genetic cloning to resurrect his dead daughter, Alisa. He preserved the remains of his daughter in a prototype cold-sleep machine.[1] He had little interest in the morality of this research, and wished only to be reunited with his daughter. He later went on to create an android with his daughter's name, likeness, and personality, Alisa Bosconovitch.
Creation[]
Doctor Bosconovitch was kidnapped by Kazuya Mishima and forced to work for the Mishima Zaibatsu on gene manipulation, cloning, and bioweapons, like Roger and Alex. Alongside this and robotic repairs, he was able to create a new type of cold-sleep machine.
During the second King of Iron Fist Tournament, Doctor Bosconovitch was rescued by Yoshimitsu, leaving the cold-machines behind. Also during the tournament, an assassination attempt on Kazuya by Nina Williams was foiled. Kazuya forced the captured Nina to undergo cryogenic sleep in the experimental new cold-sleep machines. On learning this, Anna Williams also volunteered to be a test subject, requesting that she be woken up in the future at the same time as Nina. It was implied that she did this because she would feel lonely without Nina, as well as jealous at the thought of her sister’s youth being preserved.
Human Experimentation[]
After Heihachi Mishima overthrew Kazuya, he regained control of the Mishima Zaibatsu and all its assets, including the frozen Williams sisters. Almost immediately after taking over, Heihachi ordered Nina's eggs to be harvested whilst she was still in cryosleep, and in vitro fertilization was performed. The Mishima Zaibatsu Supersoldier Program was launched, which intended to create ultimate supersoldiers by experimenting on the resulting children. The project failed due to most of the children dying from the experiment.[2] One child, Steve Fox, was able to survive and eventually escape, thanks to the help of one of the Zaibatsu's researchers, Emma Kliesen, who felt sorry for the boy.
Awakening from Cryosleep[]
Both Nina and Anna were awakened from cryosleep fifteen years later by the Ogre's evil presence. Whilst Anna awoke with no side effects, Nina awoke suffering from cryosleep-induced amnesia.[3] Her memory loss continued to affect her throughout Tekken 3, Tekken 4, and the start of Tekken 5.
It is unknown if the cold-sleep machines are still in existence or in use, or whether they were used at all to create Alisa Bosconovitch, as Doctor Bosconovitch originally intended.
Trivia[]
- If the body of Doctor Bosconovitch's daughter was not used in the creation of the android, Alisa Bosconovitch, then it is likely that her remains are still frozen in a Russian-based prototype cold-sleep machine.
