Demon God Fist (魔神拳 Majinken?, lit. "Devil Fist") is a move possessed by Kazuya from Tekken 2 onwards. In games prior to Tekken 4, the move was called Heavy Body Blow. The move can be seen as an alternate version of the Abolishing Fist, which was introduced in Tekken Tag Tournament.
Jin Kazama in Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament, and Devil Jin in Tekken 5 had this move, though in the English version of the game, it was listed under the name Demon Gut Punch. This acted as the first hit of the Laser Cannon or Laser Scraper. Ogre and True Ogre also retained this move throughout all their appearances.
Doctor Bosconovitch can also perform this move in Tekken 3, however he no longer had the move when he reappeared in Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
In Tekken 6, the move was turned into a homing attack, and in Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Kazuya, Ogre and True Ogre's variants are all tag bufferable.
Description[]
Demon God Fist is a powerful, roundhouse punch performed with the right hand (the reverse hand), aimed towards the opponent's mid section. On hitting, the impact folds the opponent forward.
When Kazuya, Ogre or True Ogre perform the move, they do so whilst rising from a crouch.
History[]
In Tekken 2, the move was an unrecoverable stun on a Clean Hit, as was the case for the Ogres in Tekken 3. In Jin's case in Tekken 3 however, it was unrecoverable on Counter Hit instead, likewise with Doctor Bosconovitch. Since Tekken Tag Tournament, the opponent can recover from the stun by inputting f, or by tagging out in the Tag games.
In Tekken 4 and Tekken 5, the stun could only be escaped by inputting f. Additionally, several of Kazuya's attacks also gained new properties if hitting an opponent stunned by the Demon God Fist. While the Clean Hit damage boost was removed in Tekken 4, the move still had an invisible checker that would dictate if the opponent would be stunned by the attack or not.
In Tekken 5.1, the stun link property of Demon God Fist was removed, and the attack became a guaranteed launcher instead.
In Tekken Tag Tournament 2, the move is used to initiate Kazuya and Jinpachi's Great Combo.
When used by True Devil Kazuya in Tekken 8's story mode, the attack notably regains its stun link property, and unlike before, Demon God Fist's stun is no longer recoverable.
In Street Fighter X Tekken, it becomes one of Kazuya's special moves. The animation is changed to make the move hit high and have a dark trail behind Kazuya's fist. Supercharging it will have Kazuya automatically follow up with a move similar to Dragon Uppercut.
Usage[]
The Demon God Fist was one of the most important tools for both Kazuya and the Ogres as its clean hit stun could potentially lead to high damage combos. In Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament, the massive reach of True Ogre's arm could make the move safe if done from a far enough distance. The move was also a standard part of Kazuya's wave dash mixups, although he did not need a mid attack since the Wind God Fist was also a mid at the time.
The Demon God Fist's utility only increased from Tekken 4 to Tekken 5 due to the Wind God Fist becoming a high, although the attack also had considerable risk as it became more punishable. Furthermore, Kazuya, during this period, was known for his ability to link several stuns, meaning he was able to deal unscaled standing damage. One thus needed to remain wary of the Demon God Fist due to its key part in stun linking.
The Demon God Fist was changed yet again in Dark Resurrection in attempts to nerf Kazuya after he became too overpowered in Tekken 5.0. He was no longer able to stun link with the Demon God Fist, and instead the move became a guaranteed launcher that suffers from poor recovery time.
While Tekken 6 turned the move into a homing attack, the fact that the Demon God Fist was launch punishable dissuaded players from using the move as much. The attack still acts as one of Kazuya's main while standing punishers; most especially against unsafe low attacks such as Dragon's Tail and Spinning Demon.
In the case of Jin and Devil Jin the Demon God Fist only retains their stun properties on counter. The enhanced version, Laser Cannon, is more often used in their case.
Trivia[]
- This move is performed by Kazuya in the Tekken 5 intro CG video, ripping apart a Jack-4's body and sending him flying.
- From Tekken 2 to Tekken Tag Tournament, there was a bug where, if a clean hit connected from behind the opponent, they would be launched instead of stunned. The launch effect is the same as the generic WS+2 uppercut performed by Heihachi and Devil. This bug most likely comes from early in Tekken 2 development, where the Mishima WS+2 uppercut was given a launch property on hit, but prior to Kazuya having the uppercut replaced with the Heavy Body Blow. The code for a clean hit WS+2 from behind wasn't updated to reflect the new move (note that a regular hit does not stun or launch). The bug is also in Tekken 3, where Ogre and True Ogre have the move. The same bug also affects Nina Williams' b+2 Right Backhand Body Blow in Tekken 2, which uses the same stun code. Interestingly, Nina's bug was fixed in Tekken 3, unlike Ogre and True Ogre.
- Doctor Bosconovitch's version of the move is based on the second-last hit of Kazuya's and Jin's 10 Hit Combo 2, and can similarly follow up with a Lightning Uppercut finisher, however this version is blockable and also weaker at 25 damage instead of 30.
