Tekken Tag Tournament - Tekken Bowl

Tekken Tag Tournament - Tekken Bowl Startup Screen.

Tekken Bowl is a side game in the Tekken series that first appeared in Tekken Tag Tournament. It made a return in Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and Tekken 7 as DLC. It was also released as a free app. In each iteration, the player has control over the direction the ball will be thrown, the spin of the ball, and the power with which the ball will be thrown.

Description[]

Tekken Tag Tournament[]

The player chooses a tag team of two characters and bowls with them. The first tag team member goes first, and if that character does not get a strike, the second tag team member must try to knock the remaining pins down to get a spare. If a strike is achieved, both characters perform one of their win animations. Hitting the highest level on the power gauge results in the character sliding down the lane with the bowling ball in hand, hitting all of the pins and resulting in a foul. The animation will replay multiple times with the Game Announcer repeating "Great!" each time.

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection[]

The player chooses a character and bowls with them. After a strike, the player's character will perform an animation, usually one of their win animations. As with Tekken Tag Tournament, if the player hits the highest level on the power gauge, the character throws themselves along with the ball down the lane, which results in a foul.

Free Bowl App[]

Tekken Bowl was released as a free app in 2011.

The only playable characters are Jin, Xiaoyu, and Panda. All three characters have unique skills: Jin is an all-rounder, Xiaoyu has high control over the spin of the ball but the weakest throwing power, while Panda has poor spin control and high power. It has three modes: Basic, Pass & Play, and Puzzle. It supports Game Center Achievement and in-game medals to collect. There are also two Mokujin cameos; they are both seen separately banging on the gong. One of them always disappears during a win animation after a strike, but comes back afterwards.

Tekken 7[]

Tekken 7 - Ultimate Tekken Bowl DLC Trailer

Tekken 7 had a version of Tekken Bowl that released as DLC on August 31st, 2017.

This version of Tekken Bowl is the same as in Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, but more realistic. The mechanics of the game are similar to real life, where the bowling frames can be seen.

As with the previous versions of Tekken Bowl, when the player overcharges, the characters throw themselves along with the ball to the end of the lane, resulting in a foul. When the player gets a spare, the characters will either perform their normal win pose or one of a selection of generic Tekken Bowl-exclusive spare poses. Similarly, missing and timing out have resulting animations that are exclusive to Tekken Bowl, with some varying per character. Once the game has ended or the character has scored a strike, the characters will do their usual pre-fight or win animations. Certain characters do not perform the generic animations after getting a spare. Getting multiple consecutive strikes in the normal mode, or scoring a strike in Striker Mode, will change the music and lighting of the bowling alley.

Interestingly, if a character continuously gets misses or gutter balls while playing a bowling set, they will begin sweating, as the sweat effect will appear on them. It is unknown whether or not this is intentional. Also, characters originally did not say anything when tossing the bowling ball, but as of the later patches, characters will now utter one of their hit sounds depending on how hard they bowl the ball.

The only characters who can lock-on targets using sensors during the game are Alisa, Yoshimitsu, Bryan, JACK-7, and Gigas.

DLC Character Noctis was given a special Overcharged animation, as well as unique spectators. Rather than Tekken Force soldiers sitting in the booth behind him, his teammates from Final Fantasy XV (Gladiolus, Ignis, and Prompto) are seated behind him.

Trivia[]

  • The game is referenced in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, where Heihachi Mishima tosses a Heihachi Trophy bowling pin.
  • The Tekken Bowl app is also the only spin-off game so far not to include Nina Williams, Paul Phoenix, Yoshimitsu, Heihachi Mishima, or King.
  • Characters will bowl with a particular hand, possibly showing which is their dominant hand. However, certain characters like Kuma, Panda, Wang Jinrei, and Hwoarang are capable of switching which side they bowl with, which could imply that they are ambidextrous.
    • As of Tekken 7, the only characters capable of switching sides and bowling with both their left and right hands are Kuma, Panda, Hwoarang, and Alisa.
  • In Tekken Tag Tournament, Yoshimitsu and Kunimitsu will both bowl while still holding their weapons in their other hand.
    • This could imply that they are each using their non-dominant hand to bowl, however in the updated Tekken 7 Tekken Bowl, Yoshimitsu continues to hold the ball with his right hand rather than his left.
    • In Tekken Tag Tournament Tekken Bowl, Kunimitsu using her non-dominant hand while in Tekken 7 Tekken Bowl, her daughter using her dominant hand and also hold her weapon at the same time.
  • In Tekken 7, each character will have individualized bowling balls with a design significant to the character (e.g. Jin's is crimson red with the Devil Gene emblem).
