Tekken 7 (鉄拳7 Tekken Sebun?, lit. Iron Fist 7) is the latest installment in Tekken series, is a fighting game developed and published by Namco. The game runs on Unreal Engine 4, making it the first game of the series to run on this engine.[1] The game also marks the 20th anniversary of the Tekken series. A update of the arcade version was released called Tekken 7: Fated Retribution. The console version is based on said update.

Plot

After the events of Tekken 6, the war between the Mishima Zaibatsu and G Corporation still continues along with the disappearance of Jin Kazama. Meanwhile, a investigative journalist who lost his wife and son during the war that Jin started (and whom also narrates throughout part of the game) begins narrating about the Mishima Zaibatsu and G Corporation.

40 years ago, Kazuya Mishima is shown fighting his father, Heihachi Mishima when suddenly he is violently kicked away by Heihachi. Kazuya is enraged because Heihachi killed his mother Kazumi Mishima. Heihachi beats Kazuya and throws him off the cliff, setting the Tekken games in motion.

Heihachi Mishima finds and reaches the Mishima Zaibatsu building and regains control after beating Nina. He announces The King of Iron Fist tournament. Heihachi and Nina Williams strike a deal with Claudio Serafino who is the leader of the Sirius Marksmen organisation to expose Kazuya Mishima, the leader of the G corporation as he possesses the Devil Gene and to turn public opinion against them. Claudio agrees and senses a force which doesn't have any relation to Jin or Kazuya.

Elsewhere, the reporter searches up information and finds something about the Mishimas history and puts together the fact that Heihachi's father, Jinpachi Mishima was imprisoned beneath Hon-Maru and the death of his wife, Kazumi Mishima neé Hachijo happened in the same year of Heihachi throwing a five-year-old Kazuya off a cliff.

Later, the United Nations manages to find a weakened Jin but not before he turns into his devil form and attacks, later on, Jin escapes and is almost captured but not before Lars Alexandersson finds him and takes out the soldiers, he takes Jin and drives away. He takes him to Violet Systems where Jin recuperates after the attack. Lee Chaolan, the leader of Violet Systems fixes Alisa Bosconovitch who was seemingly destroyed in the last game. The reporter, having met with Lars and Lee during his findings was going to kill Jin in his sleep but Lars discourages him, telling him that he wants to kill Jin too, but he is the only one that has a chance of stopping conflict with Kazuya and Heihachi.

Heihachi is meditating at a temple when suddenly the doors violently open as Akuma is revealed, Heihachi and Akuma fight only for Jack-6 robots to bust in and are defeated by the two. Heihachi asks who the demon is, Akuma tells him his name and that he was sent by Kazumi before her death to kill Heihachi and Kazuya. Kazuya, unbeknownst to the pair is hearing this from one of the Jack-6 robots, Heihachi and Akuma face off again with Akuma seemingly killing Heihachi who escapes later and declares himself dead to the public.

The Tekken Force invades and Nina attempts to take Jin but is stopped by the now repaired Alisa. Nina manages to capture Jin but as she contacts the people on the helicopter, Lee's voice can be heard as the Tekken Force soldiers aboard fall and Lee controls the helicopter, Lee, Lars, and Alisa eventually fend off the Tekken Force and rescue Jin from being taken.

Akuma later appears and the G Corporation soldiers have their guns trained on him. Kazuya, however, tells them to lead him to the roof, Kazuya asks how he knows his mother, Akuma replies that he owes a debt to Kazumi because she saved his life. They fight and Kazuya turns into his devil form, Heihachi manages to capture Kazuya turning into his devil form. Akuma and Kazuya fight with the building they stood on being destroyed by Heihachi using a beam from out of space. News spread about the sighting of a devil which was rumored to be Kazuya.

The reporter mentions how he thought that his town was destroyed by human beings but he thinks there was more to it. Kazuya retaliates by shooting down the beam Heihachi shot from which results in it crashing down to earth. The reporter then tries to tell the Mishima Zaibatsu about his new èxpose he's doing on them but much to his surprise, Heihachi wants to meet up with the reporter.

Heihachi tells him about Kazumi and about how they met, when one day, Kazumi has gotten a fever and was recovered, the next day Kazumi confronted Heihachi when he was training and told him one day he would inflict war on others and fights, during the fight she turns into her devil form. Heihachi beats her and walks away, Kazumi gets up for another attack when Heihachi grabs her by the throat and crushes her larynx, killing her. Heihachi then told the reported he threw Kazuya off a cliff because he wanted to see if he could get back up and become the heir to the Mishima Zaibatsu. Heihachi then says it's his fault about his family's deaths. The reporter asks him how he knows before being grabbed by Tekken soldiers, the reporter asks what this war means to Heihachi only for Heihachi to walk off and the reporter getting knocked out by the Tekken soldiers.

When he wakes up he sees Lars who tells him the Zaibatsu told him to come and they go back to Violet Systems, the reporter was thinking about what Heihachi said and the look Heihachi gave him. They arrive at Violet Systems a few hours later only to see the view of a volcano where Kazuya and Heihachi stand to fight on a TV which had the reporter in shock.

Kazuya and Heihachi stand on a volcano where they planned to fight, Heihachi starts beating Kazuya, before Kazuya turns into a super upgrade of his Devil Gene form. They fight, and Kazuya and Heihachi begin punching each other, Kazuya punches Heihachi in the chest and watches as Heihachi headbutts Kazuya, as Kazuya can barely stand, he gets flashbacks of everything that happened to him, seeing how his father threw him off a cliff and that his father killed his mother in the games before and after. Kazuya gets mad and hits Heihachi with a strong punch which stops Heihachi's heart, causing him to fall to the ground and die. Kazuya throws Heihachi's lifeless body into the volcano with Kazuya saying those words: "A fight is about who is left standing. Nothing else".

However, Kazuya notices Akuma is also not dead, as he dodges Akuma's Gohadoken and proceeds to battle him in his super devil form again. As the volcano began to erupt as Devil Kazuya's Devil Blaster and Akuma's Messatsu Gohado clashed, the final outcome of the fight is unknown.

Elsewhere in the afternoon, Lars, Alisa, and Lee are seen on the rooftop, watching the ruins across the world without Heihachi since the Mishima Zaibatsu's downfall, and concluding that G Corporation won't be doing anything to stop this crisis war. Soon, Lars dispatches his awakened nephew, Jin as their final hope to eliminate Kazuya for good and to make it up for most of his nephew's remaining sins for what he has done to the world from the previous game, as Jin complies, due to the devil's blood that runs through his veins as his father and that it is up to him to save the world, kill Kazuya, and end this war once and for all, implying that Kazuya may likely survive the second battle against Akuma.

Development

Details

Tekken 7 was first announced by Tekken director, Katsuhiro Harada on July 13, 2014, during EVO 2014. He first revealed the trailer and unveiled a new logo for the series.[2] It began when Harada found out the title was leaked online[3] -  The game wasn't originally to have been unveiled so soon, but the announcement was brought forward due to the leak.[4] Along with the confirmed development of Tekken X Street Fighter, an extended launch trailer, character design details, and other info regarding the game was revealed at their San Diego Comic-Con fighting panel on July 25th, 2014.

Tekken 7 makes use of the Unreal Engine 4 game engine which will allow the game to be developed for multiple platforms. Bandai Namco was unable to show the gameplay system at the SDCC at the time due to it still being worked for. It was stated by Harada that the arcade release of Tekken 7 would have network features very similar to Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

There are several guest artists who have designed the character designs. Said artists include Mari Shimazaki (Bayonetta), Yusuke Kozaki (Fire Emblem Awakening, No More Heroes), Ninnin (Duel Masters, Cardfight!!, Vanguard) and Kenichiro Yoshimura (Max Anarchy/Anarchy Reigns). Also, Shinji Aramaki is directing the intro for Tekken 7. The game also focuses on one-on-one battles again like previous numbered installments, not team-based as in the Tekken Tag Tournament series.

Tekken 7 had an arcade version test in Japan on October 3rd, 4th, and 5th.[5] Tekken 7 has also two new systems.[6]

Akitaka Tohyama returned to compose the soundtrack.[7]

Character information

The 2014 EVO trailer revealed a female figure, later confirmed to be the game's antagonist, Kazumi Mishima, speaking with an unknown character. In the first trailer for the update version, the unknown character who is speaking to Kazumi is revealed to be none other than Street Fighter's Akuma who will become the guest character for this game.

In October 2014, newcomers Katarina Alves and Claudio Serafino were playable at the location test. Sometime after, Lars Alexandersson's return was confirmed, he has received a redesign by Ninnin.[8]

During August 2014, Harada asked fans to give feedback regarding newcomer Shaheen, whose concept art was revealed on August 8. The character was unnamed and not finalized at the time, as to prevent offense to the Arabian community, most likely due to an incident regarding the Tekken Tag Tournament 2 stage, Modern Oasis.

On February 7th, 2015, Harada confirmed more new characters beyond the four already announced are to be revealed, with no specified date given.[9] On March 19th, 2015, in-game character models images of Jin Kazama, Devil Jin and two newcomers, Josie Rizal, a female Filipino fighter and a large red behemoth creature named Gigas, were revealed.[10] By the time they were leaked, Harada neither debunked nor confirmed the images.[11] Prior to his playable debut before the time release update, Jin Kazama was already confirmed as a secret sub-boss in the arcade mode, replacing Heihachi under some conditions.[12]

Gameplay

Combo System

TEKKEN_7_Gameplay

TEKKEN 7 Gameplay

The combo system in Tekken 7 retains some of the aspects of Tekken Revolution, in which it is no longer possible to bound a character during a combo. However, the bound state still exists, but "a lot of moves that use to bound are being taken out".[13] In order to compensate for the lack of bounds, many moves were given new combo dynamics in order to extend combos. Low parries will still cause a bound effect as they do in Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion.

An example would be Hwoarang's "Backlash" having the same properties in a combo as it would on a regular hit, in which it would cause the opponent to slump to the ground. This new feature has been dubbed by Japanese players as "Kirimomi" (translated as "Aerial Tailspin"), and, like bound had been in Tekken 6 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2, can only be done once during a combo.

Additionally, there are other new positions that characters may be left at. One such position shows a character raising their back in pain, similar to the K.O animation.

Screw

Re-introduced with a new juggle move property to replace ground bounds, screw moves are the new staple for many juggle-based combos, as the juggle version of screw property makes the player’s juggled opponent spin and land in a very vulnerable slump-like state where extra combos and damage are guaranteed; may also be referred to as kirimomi or tailspin.

Power Crush

One of the new features is the introduction of a new type of move called Power Crush. These moves absorb damage from a mid or a high attack, and it still continues despite taking damage.

Wall Bounce

After the inclusion of Geese Howard, Wall Bounce was later applied to the rest of the characters in Season 2. Wall Bounce can only be applied by certain moves with pushback properties, when the opponent is standing/crouching.

Auto Combo

A simplified Auto Combo mechanic is finally been re-introduced in Season 2, as it was originally Story Mode only on certain main story’s chapters. It can only be applied by pressing either LP or RP for mostly three times respectively. Players can set Auto Combo on or off for the gameplay.

Players can also keep three of the character's special moves to serve as a combo or three phases of their respective combo moves.

Rage Moves

Rage Arts

Rage Arts alter the performance of a single move of a character during Rage Mode. A Rage Art perform an attack animation akin to the Ultra Moves from the Street Fighter series, Critical Edge from Soul Calibur V, and Power Blow from Dead or Alive 5. A significant note is that when a Rage Art is performed, the character will immediately lose their rage. These arts can also be done during a combo.

In Fated Retribution update, if the characters take more damage from the opponents' attacks while in Rage Mode, the Rage Arts' damage increases.

Rage Drive

Introduced in Fated Retribution updated is a new Rage Mode feature called "Rage Drives". Functioning the same as a Rage Art (that is requiring a player sacrifice Rage Mode to execute it), Rage Drives are different in that they do not cause a cinematic string of attacks and instead can be combo-ed out of once landed. They also confer certain extra effects such as a second screw in a single combo. Rage Arts are also adjusted so that the amount of damage dealt to the enemy is inversely proportional to the player's current health bar. Akuma, Eliza and Geese Howard are excepted from Rage Drives, instead, have a secondary meter in place of a Rage Drive that allows them to perform a super move once maxed as well as perform other attacks (such as EX moves).

Item Moves

Item moves will be returning for Tekken 7, an interesting note is that Asuka, King, and Xiaoyu retain the same item moves as they had in Tekken Tag Tournament 2. It is unknown if the returning characters from TTT2 will keep their in-game item move.

Stage Effects

Like in TTT2, stage effects (or stage gimmicks) also return, including the "balcony break" introduced in Tag 2. Floor and balcony breaks now cause an effect similar to a Tag Assault in Tag 2 where the opponent is flung up instead of into a bound state. Wall breaks have not been affected. Only one stage, Forgotten Realm, in Tekken 7 has floor breaks and, for the first time, has several within the same stage (in the location tests only three floors were shown but in the final release a fourth, underground floor was added for three floor breaks in the same stage).

Other changes

Tekken 7 changes certain movement mechanics, such as back walking (which now works as it does in Tekken Revolution with the characters taking longer strides when walking backwards as opposed to shuffling). Back rolls from a grounded state have been removed in favor of a new wakeup animation where the opponent gets off the floor while moving back. Ankle kicks are accompanied by a new back roll animation that creates separation after executing one.

New camera effects have been added such as dynamic slowdown on trade and certain high-impact hits and a slow-motion effect that occurs on when both characters attack at the same time and one or both characters will be knocked out by the next hit. For networked matches, players can now specify if they want to be on the left or right side at all times, regardless if they are coming in as player one or two in the match itself and the camera will change to reflect that. Each stage now has two themes that play during the match. The second theme will begin when one character is one point shy of victory and sometimes the stage will change on the last point of a match as well (such as a storm falling over Dragon's Nest). One stage, Devil's Pit, will also change entirely (going from walled to infinite) when one character nears victory, similar to how certain stages in SoulCalibur V function.

Tekken Bowl

Tekken 7 - Ultimate Tekken Bowl DLC Trailer

On August 2017, the Tekken Bowl mini-game returned as a DLC, known as the Ultimate Tekken Bowl. It was revealed in a trailer, which shows Harada, the producer of the game, leaving the Namco-Bandai building to demonstrate his bowling skills at the Bowling Lanes. Harada is last seen posing one of Paul's win animations. This version of Tekken Bowl is noticeably more realistic than the previous versions. The mode along with other customizations and swimsuit DLC were released on August 31, 2017.

Trivia

  • This is the first Tekken game where Kazumi Mishima makes her canonical debut. Prior to the release of Tekken 7, the character was alluded to twice.
    • The first time was in Heihachi's Tekken 2 stage, in which their names ("Heihachi and Kazumi") are written on the floorboard (which was also shown in the very first trailer of Tekken 7).
    • The second time was in the non-canon OVA film Tekken: The Motion Picture, where she was shown in a picture and was just referred as "Kazuya's Mother" at the time.
  • It is also the first game where certain non-canon characters made their canon debut in the mainline game, in this case, Eliza from Tekken Revolution.
  • This is the first mainline Tekken game, and second Tekken game entry (the first being Tekken Tag Tournament 2 in which all characters speak the native language of their country of origin, as opposed to previous Tekken games, where all characters spoke either English or Japanese, followed by Chinese and Korean in Tekken 5.
  • This is the first game in the series where past events can be re-lived by playing through them, like in the Tekken 5 intro flashback segment, unlike in Tekken 6 where the previous games' story was only featured in cutscenes in the Scenario Campaign prologue.
  • Confirmed returning fighters who have been given new or modified main outfits are so far Kazuya Mishima, Hwoarang, Jin, King II, Lars, Marshall, Jack, and, as usual, Yoshimitsu.
    • In Fated Retribution and the console version, all the remaining (non-guest) characters also received new default outfits for each of them (including Hwoarang who is now being given a proper newer one), with King also receiving an update to his new one (a cape) and Eliza being the only to not receive one since this is her first appearance in the main series.
  • This is the 2nd game to feature a guest character with Tekken 3 being the 1st, and the 1st game to feature more than 1 guest character.
    • This is also the first time that Tekken features three different characters hailing from three different gaming companies — Capcom, SNK & Square Enix — and three different Universes — Street Fighter, The King of Fighters/Fatal Fury/Art of Fighting & Final Fantasy. Making it one of the most prolific and ambitious Tekken game ever made in the history of fighting games.
    • It is now the second game since Tekken 3 to feature a guest character hailing from a comic series. The second character being Negan from Image Comics' The Walking Dead franchise.
  • This is the first non-spin-off Tekken game to be released for PC.
    • This is also the first Tekken game to be released for PlayStation 4 & Xbox One.
  • This is the third Tekken game since Tekken and Tekken 2, and the first after their introduction, to not feature a mimic character.
  • Young Heihachi's looks are obtainable as a Customization (Hair and beard).
  • A lot of characters didn't return to Tekken 7 as playable characters but some make cameos in the game. Combot, for example, is seen in the Story Mode in the background at Violet Systems. Other examples are Jack-4, Jack-6 and Devil Kazuya. A lot of characters from the Tekken universe that aren't playable in the game are mentioned. Examples are Sebastian, Emma Kliesen, Jane, Dr. Abel, and Azazel.
  • This is the second game in the series and the first canonical game that uses in-game graphics in the endings instead of CGI.
  • Prior Season 2, which adds Marduk, Steve was the only Tekken 4 veteran in this game, similar status as Tekken 2 veteran Lei.
  • This is the first canonical game in which Jane, since she was introduced, does not appear in Jack's ending.
  • This game is dedicated to Masaya Nakamura, who was a businessman and founder of Namco. He passed away on January 22, 2017, same date when Kamen Rider Ex-Aid Episode 15 aired.
    • Speaking of Kamen Rider Ex-Aid, the updated version of arcade game, Fated Retribution was somehow being used instead of Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion, causing a continuity on the said TV series, as 6 was released before how Zero Day first occur, while 7 was released four years after Zero Day and the release of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 console, and a year before Kamen Rider Ex-Aid aired. It is likely why Kamen Rider Ex-Aid uses Tekken 7: Fated Retribution, is to promote its console release in 2017.
  • Tekken 7 is the first game to mark the return of Capcom and SNK clashes since SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos.
  • The game implements the same wet sweat feature that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 has, although with notable changes; Characters no longer get wet when they fall in the water, the Infinite Azure stage being an example, however they will appear wet during the rainy weather transitions of set stages. Furthermore, characters will only sweat from taking damage.
  • This is the third Tekken game since Tekken Tag Tournament and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, to have a bowling minigame called Tekken Bowl.
  • Multiple scenes in the Story Mode are reminiscent of scenes from the past Tekken games, most of them are prior to the first Tekken game.
  • This is the first Tekken game to have a third party company provide some assets, which is Tecmo Koei's Team Ninja for some reused voice clips of one of the game's guest characters Noctis Lucis Caelum from Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.
  • This is the second Tekken game which marked the final appearance of Heihachi Mishima's voice actor. In this case, Unshō Ishizuka, who passed away in August 13, 2018; not one year after the game’s release and Heihachi’s true death.
  • This is the first console game to have completely changed the character select screen in each season:
    • Season 1: Top row is for Fated Retribution (middle) and DLC characters (each sides), while the 2 lower rows are for the original arcade roster.
    • Season 2: Top row is for DLC characters only, while the 2 lower rows are for the base roster, similar to Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
      • Top Row: Season 1 DLC are on the middle, while latter Seasons like Season 2 DLC are on each sides.
      • Lower Rows: Unlike original Fated Retribution base additions who are on each sides, Akuma is at the original arcade roster section on the middle row, due to being part of main story.
  • As of Season 2, stage select has been changed back to its classic column design, rather than a linear list one.
  • Each DLC Character Season Passes represents few themes:
    • Season 1 consist DLC characters who can utilize jump-in attacks, Eliza included. It mostly consist 2 guest characters outside Eliza.
    • Season 2 consist America-related DLC characters: Lei, Anna and Marduk voiced by each of their American voice actors along with the American accents, despite not being Americans; while Armor King, Julia and Negan hailed from their respective American country.
    • Season 3 consist Asian-related DLC characters: Leroy's fighting style being originate from Asian, despite himself being American; while the rest of the three are indeed has the fighting styles originating from their birth country/region. It mostly consist 2 original and new characters each.
